Frequently asked questions
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH MONTANA PAPERS TO DIGITIZE?
We are directed by a Selection Advisory Board made up of historians, educators and journalists. Every two years they complete a detailed selection process, factoring in geographic representation, temporal coverage, and research value. Learn more.
WHY DON'T YOU DIGITIZE ALL OF MONTANA'S HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS?
We wish we could. Based on our experience, we estimate that digitizing all of the Society's newspaper holdings would keep two full-time employees busy for approximately 150 years! However, other institutions around Montana are digitizing their own hometown newspapers. See a list here.
WILL YOU EVER DIGITIZE MORE RECENT NEWSPAPERS?
Any newspaper issue published before January 1923 is out of copyright and can be freely reproduced. The National Digital Newspaper Program funds digitization of pre-1923 papers only. Learn more.
IS ANYONE BESIDES THE MHS DIGITIZING MONTANA NEWSPAPERS?
Yes, a number of libraries around the state are digitizing historical issues of their local newspapers. See a list here.
IS THERE A LIST OF ALL NEWSPAPERS EVER PUBLISHED IN MONTANA?
Yes. The Library of Congress maintains the U.S. Newspaper Directory on its web site. Click "Select State" and choose Montana. Enter any other search criteria you want, such as county and/or city, then click the Search button at bottom right.
An earlier resource, the Union List of Montana Newspapers, includes nearly all Montana newspapers published up to the 1970s, but is not comprehensive for the period 1970-present. It is available as a searchable PDF file. Please go to A Union List of Montana Newspapers in Montana Repositories and click the DOWNLOAD tab.
ARE OTHER STATES DIGITIZING HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS?
The NDNP program includes newspapers from 36 states and Puerto Rico. Those that have not yet joined are: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
